Gresham’s Law of Planning

Gresham’s Law of Planning states that a person with responsibility for both routine activities and long-term planning is likely to find the routine activities taking the greater part of his time.

I found this to be very true. Daily routine takes more time or most of our time under two scenarios.

Case 1:
When we are too obsessed with our routine we tend to neglect our long-term plans. This may be true when our priority is inclined towards the routine activities as the rewards it can gain are quick and more visible.

Case 2:
This happens when we are totally detached with our routine. Routines cannot be skipped. So we tend to drag it on and on, eventually leaving behind very less or practically no time for our long term plans.

In either case, the culprit is not time. We are the only person responsible for our actions. In my opinion, Case 1 is far better a scenario to have in life than Case 2. We end up spending time and energy for what we actually want or enjoy doing. Case 2 is a nightmare. It draws nothing good from you and your efforts. Neither you are happy nor do you build the capability of keeping others happy. Life goes waste whining. Job satisfaction, perfection in what you do, the net result of the job you do, the customer satisfaction and relation, all these depends on which case you belong to. Case 2 will definitely leave you dissatisfied while Case 1 may bring out the best in you.

Finally all I have to say here is…. I’m a victim of Case 2. My routine activities, kept me out of my long term plans and also my most favorite ‘world’, the world of dreams, stories, and blogs. I have fought my way back to my dream place. So my point here is, it’s always possible to do WHAT YOU WANT.

All irritations and hatred arising by virtue of reading this blog can be shown at the comments section 

That’s an interesting blog. It makes me want to discuss more :-)

Though u are so detached from your routine activities, you still do them forcefully and that prevents you from pursuing your long term goals and also your simple pleasures that you usually get doing some interesting routine activities. Am I getting your picture clear? If I am understanding it right, wow J.. that’s is a nice way of thinking…

Wel... your case1 leaves me with a question….don’t you think that your obsessive routine activities which give you momentary joy are actually preventing you from reaching your long term objective? I mean to say, you will always be "planning" your long term responsibility and not actually doing it.

So in this way, there shouldn’t be any division between long term plans and daily activities, your daily activities should include planning for your long term plan. Gresham's law is all wrong.. ha ha :-) (ofcourse, I am talking sense… am not confused)

Manamkettavaney.... IPS yezhudhama iruka ippadi oru blog vera!!!

If you want a reason to quit from achieving your dream dont blame it on whats happening around you. The force within you is much greater than the force around you.

I would say that you have let yourself be distracted from the long term objective that you once had. I strongly believe that that objective is no longer a part of you and you are not the same person you were 2 years ago!....

Sorry to say this... But Reality bites Software Engineer Sir (Cud have been ACP Sir!!!).

Long gap between the last and the latest post...and long time between the latest post and my reading.....Finally you are back I suppose....Have you tried the '21' day habit yet??(by Maxwell Maltz)...It says that if you continue doing something for 21 days then it becomes a habit...Why dont you for a change scribble something for about 21 days in your blog and notice the change....I miss your short stories.
